Good and EVO

Video: HTC EVO 4G LTE, EVO 3D, and original EVO 4G side by side

I ran out of phones and used Jenn's old EVO 3D to take this picture

I’d been reading in the weeks and months leading up to the initial launch of the HTC EVO 4G LTE about the extreme viewing angle, the quality of the camera, and the incredible battery life. I’ve covered some on the picture quality, in which I think the new EVO lives up to most of the hype, but  I wanted to tackle the extreme viewing angle claims, and finally get a picture of all three phones together up on the site.

While there’s no doubt in that the display is the best I’ve seen on a phone, and I personally can’t discern any huge improvements when the phone is looked at at an angle screenwise, I have noticed that the 4G LTE reflects less light, which does provide a little improvement when attempting to view at wider angles.

I did a side by side viewing and video of the EVO 4G LTE, the EVO 3D, and the original EVO 4G using another EVO 3D to take the video. The reflective qualities of the phones are quite markedly different, but the viewing angles do not appear to change much from one phone to the other.

I used the same YouTube video on all three phones, but unfortunately the phone I was using to take the video did not do a terribly good job of translating the color or showing at all times that this was being taken in daylight, and not at 3:oo a.m.

My impressions from a side-by side viewing of the display were that the EVO 4G LTE came out on top, followed reasonably closely by the EVO 3D, which did a whole lot better visually than it did in the camera comparison last week. Finally, the original EVO 4G appeared washed out in comparison.

While it may not be evident in the video, in real life the original EVO 4G looked the worst of the group. I’m not sure if this is due to the equipment failing after over two years of outstanding service, the ROM, or if screen technology went onward. I’m assuming the latter, as I can’t imagine the EVO 4G ever dying. It’s a freaking tank.

The difference in screen quality between the EVO 4G and the EVO 3D is, in my opinion, about as noticeable as between the 3D and the 4G LTE. They have done some great things with the display since the EVO 4G first came out.

Enjoy the video!
