eSIM support arrives on the S21 Ultra 5g w/Android 12

The days of owning a SIM pushing tool are closer to an end today, at least for some, with the Android 12 update of the Samsung Galaxy S21 Ultra 5G and various others. You’ll notice eSIM is now listed as a thing.

Unlike your traditional Subscriber Identity Module that’s on a little piece of plastic you can very very easily drop down an air conditioner vent, an eSIM is just a software version of the SIM and cannot be easily dropped down an air conditioner vent without the phone attached, and that’s what grates are for. They’re grate.

This should mean you’ll be able to port a phone from carrier to carrier without having to visit a store or wait for a SIM to ship to you in the future. It also probably means that it’ll open up exciting and interesting phone spoofing opportunities for criminals in the future, but I’m guessing that’s going to be claimed it can’t happen right now and happen in about two or three months.

I don’t have a picture of the right SIM handy

My assumption is this has been smaller MNVO-lead rather than the big carriers. It’s not a particularly stunning technological achievement and stinks of something that was designed to make you delay switching because you had to physically go somewhere.

Or maybe eSIM is that other thing…

Anyway, I will keep my SIM popper handy because any time I attempt to review these cameras I’m pressing reset on one of them.
