Wal-Mart unveils video download store

It seems doomed to failure to me, but the new Wal-Mart Video Downloads Beta (catchy name) was made official today.

At first glance, the service looks better (i.e., cheaper) than Amazon Unbox. Wal-Mart offers downloads at just $2 for portable devices, $3 for computers, and $4 for both . . . but you need to buy the real DVD first. Any DVD bearing some sort of "feature sticker" will contain the promo code required for the downloads.

Superman Returns will be the first flick available, with other film and TV content from various movie studios and TV networks to follow.  The URL hasn’t been released yet, but mediadownloads.walmart.com looks to be about right.
