Free Treo 680 from mytreo.net
Before the Treo 680 became part of any mobile carrier’s family, it was rumored that Cingular might give the device away for free with new service activation. But truth behind the optimistic speculation was nowhere in sight when on Black Friday the 680 hit Cingular bearing a $199.99 starting price. The best deal would-be owners were eventually treated to was a 650 trade-in that reduced the price of the 680 (with new service) to $75. A great price for new Cingular subscribers, sure, but pretty useless for current ones.
But thanks to mytreo.net, all that has changed. For a limited time, first-time customers can sign up for service and get the graphite 680 absolutely free after mail-in rebates. Current Cingular subscribers (who are not commitment phobes) need only extend their contracts for another two years to pick up the very same smartphone for just $39.99, also after mail-in rebates. Both offers can be scooped up here.
If, like me, you’re already locked into a blood-signed contract with another carrier, the only way to get your hands on a 680 is to say goodbye to $400. The upside (aside from the free Mobile Music Pack) is that you get your choice of color. I don’t know why, but the arctic, crimson, and copper models are only available unlocked. Not sure that an orange phone is worth $400, but as someone who would pounce on a pink 680 in a heartbeat, I’m not one to judge.
