HTC Athena MSRP fit for a goddess

AthenaLooks like the HTC Athena will be competing with Samsung’s SPH-P9000 for the title of "handtop everyone wanted until its price was announced."

The P9000, as you know, is the 30GB Windows XP device expected to sell for just under $2000 when it’s released in Korea by June 2007. The Athena, on the other hand, is the 8GB Windows Mobile device that, according to HPC.ru, will sell for $1700 when it beats the P9000 to American soil early next year.

With current UMPCs dropping in price and who knows how many new ones debuting at more reasonable prices at CES, a handtop needs  a lot more than good looks (okay, sheer beauty) to command the cost of high-end, fuller-featured, arguably more usable laptops.

I still want both, of course, but that’s really beside the point.
