Windows Mobile 6.0 gets renamed

Windows_mobileIn a move that I think is supposed to simplify things, Microsoft has bestowed its upcoming Crossbow (Windows Mobile 6.0) editions with new names. Pocket PC Edition is becoming Classic, Smartphone will be called Standard, and Pocket PC Phone Edition is being changed to Professional.

Personally, I think Microsoft should have left well enough alone. The new names don’t seem to help anyone. Newcomers to the platform will still be confused (e.g., "Professional" doesn’t make it any clearer that the device has a touch screen and Mobile Office) and old-timers will need to rely on word associations and/or forget names that already required more time than necessary to memorize in the first place.
