Sony 8GB MS PRO Duo: Late and picky
About a month behind schedule and more expensive than it was supposed to be, the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (MSX-M8GS) will finally begin selling in Japan for $325. Unfortunately, according to Newlaunches, the memory card will only be compatible with select products like Vaio notebooks and Cyber-shot digital cameras sold in 2007, PSPs with firmware version 2.81 (my husband and I are still running 1.5!), and some other stuff that will eventually be revealed on Sony’s compability chart just as soon as it’s updated to include the 8GB stick.
The info seems to be slightly erroneous and exclusive to Asia, as the card was announced in the U.S. at CES in January and can already be ordered for as little as $225. It’s also listed at Sony Style with an expected ship date of "on or before February 19, 2007." And judging by the note in the fineprint about downloading Memory Stick PRO System Update to use the 8GB card with CLIEs (for crying out loud), I’m thinking it’ll work just fine with other pre-2007 Sony gear, too.
Jenn, about the PSP issue, if it bothers u enough, u know there are custom made firmware from 2.81 all the way to 3.10 right? that have all the features of 1.5 + 3.10 and there not very hard to install (ive done it b4). Find out more here: http://pspupdates.qj.net/
Ouch, 325$? I hoped this card would be a practical way of expanding the UX’s memory without upgrading the HDD, however with that insane price tag, you may as well just buy a new HDD.
Thanks for the link, Trey.
Initially, my husband and I were holding onto 1.5 because of all the emulators and ROMs. By the time all the other firmware versions came out and were hacked, we had already sort of lost interest in the device. Whenever I turn mine on now, I always need to go through the initial setup: that’s how infrequently it gets used!
Benz: Yeah, this would’ve been an easy way to combat the hidden partition. $225 through PC Universe isn’t too bad, though. Prices drop fairly quickly, too, so maybe it won’t be long before you can get 8GB for $100. A few years ago, I bought my 1GB cards for about $100 and thought it was such a good deal!
wow! 325$ At least it will push down the prices of the 4gb
