Sony 8GB MS PRO Duo: Late and picky

8gb_msproduo_1About a month behind schedule and more expensive than it was supposed to be, the 8GB Memory Stick PRO Duo (MSX-M8GS) will finally begin selling in Japan for $325. Unfortunately, according to Newlaunches, the memory card will only be compatible with select products like Vaio notebooks and Cyber-shot digital cameras sold in 2007, PSPs with firmware version 2.81 (my husband and I are still running 1.5!), and some other stuff that will eventually be revealed on Sony’s compability chart just as soon as it’s updated to include the 8GB stick.

The info seems to be slightly erroneous and exclusive to Asia, as the card was announced in the U.S. at CES in January and can already be ordered for as little as $225. It’s also listed at Sony Style with an expected ship date of "on or before February 19, 2007." And judging by the note in the fineprint about downloading Memory Stick PRO System Update to use the 8GB card with CLIEs (for crying out loud), I’m thinking it’ll work just fine with other pre-2007 Sony gear, too.
