Unidentified device could be new UMPC concept

Svm_umpc_concept1What’s this, then? That’s what Joe from Only UMPC has me (and himself) wondering, and just days after I took a jab at the prototype devices Intel has been showing off since last year, too.

The mysterious unit with the sliding display, trackpad, and thumboard may not even be from Intel, of course, but it was spotted at Computex alongside a better-looking version of this reference design from the IDF era. Then again, it could also be a smartphone, UMD, or MID. No one can really venture a guess at this point because it’s never been seen turned on.

I liked the look of the device when I first saw it yesterday, but now I think it looks a bit like a side view mirror. Doesn’t it? There’s just something about that wide "border" (what color is that? green? gold?) around the display that makes me want to attach it to the outside of my car.

I can’t make out the icons on the two buttons built into the right side of the border or printed on the left side of the screen, but the minimalism is kind of nice. On the other hand, the placement of what I’m assuming is a tiny trackpad doesn’t look too friendly for lefties and the keys seem almost flush against the casing.

Thoughts?
