Unlocked HTC Advantage ships by mid-August

Even though it was revealed several months ago that Amazon would be selling the HTC Advantage unlocked this summer, I was still surprised by I4U’s discovery of the actual product page.

More surprising, however, was the exorbitant price. I had been bracing myself for something upwards of $500, but I definitely winced at the device’s $850 asking price . . . mostly because I decided to forgo eating for a while to buy it. It’s ridiculous, I know, but I’ve been pining away for this beautiful little handtop since December (when it was answering to the name Athena/X7500  and running WM5; now it’s the X7501 and it runs WM6), and that’s basically an eternity plus a day when it comes to gadget lust.

And relief is just barely in sight. According to my receipt, Amazon is estimating a July 30 to August 13 shipping date with delivery to follow (cruelly) somewhere between August 6 and 24. Um, not to sound ungrateful that the device is finally washing up on U.S. shores (apparently it takes half a year for it to cross the Pacific), but August 24 is two whole months away. Doesn’t that border on illegal use of torture by an online megastore or something?

The X7500 is also available (right now, actually) at prices starting at $1200.  Now that’s ridiculous.
