YouTube now incompatible with Sony mylo 2 (updated)

Mylo2_youtube

Shortly after Sony bestowed its mylo 2 (COM-2) personal communicator with the 1.201 firmware update, which added video recording for direct YouTube uploads, users began to complain that the upgrade "broke" YouTube. Having experienced the exact opposite when I updated my mylo 2 (as promised in the release notes, Flash video playback was much smoother), I assumed the issue others were having could be resolved by either re-downloading the file or rebooting the system.

As it turns out, however, YouTube happened to fiddle with the settings of their Flash player a few days after the firmware was released. These changes, according to the mylo labs forums, are incompatible with the version of Flash Lite installed on the mylo 2, making viewing YouTube videos on the device no longer possible.

I hadn’t used the device since testing the recording and direct YouTube uploading feature last week, so learning of the news from a comment left by Anonymous yesterday had me reaching for the unit as soon as I could.

Yep. Exactly as described by unhappy users who updated their mylos after YouTube changed their settings, a little red X now displays in the upper-left corner of where the video is supposed to be.

Sony eSupport is aware of the problem and has posted the following note on theirs News & Alerts page:

The mylo COM-2 is currently experiencing problems with viewing and playing back YouTube videos. Sony is working diligently to resolve this issue with YouTube. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

There’s word on the MyloForums that "the new upgrade" will be available by the end of this week, but until it’s actually listed on the mylo’s Software Updates & Drivers page, you might want to consider some other device to provide your mobile YouTube fix. I hear some obscure fruit phone is coming out tomorrow . . .

UPDATE 07.18.08: YouTube playback has been restored.
