Gadget lust fulfilled in Sparks, Nevada

Archos_5_reno

Ahh! After hitting every Circuit City within a 100-mile radius in Northern California, I finally found the 250GB Archos 5 Internet Media Tablet that’s been haunting me for the past few weeks. It took a 3.5-hour drive in terrible weather last night and a quick stop at the Reno location this afternoon to find out that the store in nearby Sparks had just one player in stock. And now they don’t have any!

I won’t have time to play with the device until we get back to our California hotel tomorrow night, but if the weather’s nice, I’ll try to do a scenic unboxing at Lake Tahoe.

  • Talk about hardcore! I’ve the Archos 704 and I like it, though I do use it less now that I’ve got an iPhone. :D

  • What’s even crazier is that I think she already has four or five previous Archos’s and the old and new iPhones. Among other things, right Jenn? This is gadget neurosis taken to new heights! At least I can live through this site since I can’t get anything new until something old breaks. And that never happens!

Looking forward to your Archos reports, Jenn.

  • Congrats on hunting down the Archos 5. I knew I should have just picked one up when I saw it at Circuit City. When I went back they didn’t have anymore. Hopefully you can post some review of the Archos and some thoughts on it.

  • @ Kevin: No, not really. We were planning to go to Reno anyway. I just thought checking the two stores they have was worth a try. If we came up empty, which I was expecting, I was just going to order it through Amazon. I couldn’t believe when the girl at the Reno store came back (from checking for a device she had never heard of and had to write on her hand!) and said that Sparks had one and that I could pay for it here and pick it up there.

I have a 704 too and honestly haven’t used it for more than an hour since my review..and that was almost 1.5 years ago! I’m surprised to hear that your iPhone has been able to “replace” it. You must have all of your videos in H.264. Mine are all in XviD and DivX, so Archos has always been my top choice in PVPs (even if I don’t use their players on a regular basis).

@ Hank: Guilty as charged! The Archos 5 is my fifth Archos player. I have the AV420, 604 WiFi, 704 WiFi, and 405. My husband is now the owner of the first two, though, so I really only have two others now. ;-)

@ HG: The warehouse that stocks the Concord store did have 16 units last week, so maybe some of them are headed your way. I don’t know how likely it is that a single warehouse would be in charge of supplying all of California, but if the Concord one is responsible for all of Northern CA then maybe the Southern CA warehouse has a box of players too. :-)

A full review is definitely on my to-do list, but I think I’ll focus on some smaller feature-specific articles first.
