Unboxing the Cowon S9

The Cowon S9 digital media player wasn’t one of the gadgets I got for Christmas, but since it arrived this week and I did open the box right after I put down the XPERIA X1, I think it’s appropriate to share my unboxing experience today. Anything that prolongs the festitivities is worth doing to me.

I still haven’t had the chance to actually turn on the device yet (yes, it’s been sitting here untouched and sans firmware upgrades for four days!), but I did let it get between the Samsung P2 and first-gen iPod touch during its photo shoot. Check it out below.

I bought the 16GB model in titanium/black, which doesn’t look as nice as the chrome/black device in all the press shots but was the only choice available when I placed my order last week.

Here it is with the Samsung P2 and first-gen touch:

And with the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 (the reason the S9 isn’t getting the attention it deserves from me right now):

Check back later for my full review.

The 16GB Cowon S9 is available now for $240 from Amazonir?t=pocketables 20&l=as2&o=1&a=B001NXDC4O - for some reason we don't have an alt tag here.

  • 720p mkv support is a tall order to fill. What are you using to play those now?

  • I know what you mean when you get a new gadget that takes all the attention… The next one in line has to wait. :) Let us know how well it compares to the iPod Touch? Right now I’m also paying a lot of attention to my MSI Wind I got for Christmas from my Daughter… very nice. I will be upgrading the RAM that I had from my Gigabyte M912, because that one I upgraded to 2GB so I have the extra 1GB. Actually I have two sticks of 1GB. One is from the SC3 and the other from the M912.

  • What issues have you heard of or seen with video support? I’ve had the player for a week now and it is one of the few I own (of which there are MANY) that doesn’t require transcoding of many downloaded videos. Beautiful playback, smooth GUI and just a nice overall experience.

  • Multiple new gadgets vying for your attention isn’t a bad problem to have! ;-)
