Original UMID M1 MID design included mouse pointer

Umid_pointer_sm I'm putting together a Q&A piece on the UMID M1 MID that will be launched in Korea next week and in other regions shortly after, but while I gather more information, double-check what's not meant for public consumption, and confirm a few details, I thought I'd share some images from a PDF proposal I received from UMID.

You've already seen live shots of the UMID device from CES, so the renderings you'll find below will pale in comparison. However, what's interesting about the images is that the original concept of the Atom-based clamshell included a mouse pointer/trackstick! This may not seem like a big deal for those who have no interest in the MID, but the absence of any kind of mouse-like control is a common question among those who are awaiting the unit's release.

In case you're looking for it elsewhere, the pointer is that little gray circle between the G, V, and B keys on the keyboard in the image you see here (bigger version below). I have an idea about why it was omitted from the final product, but I'll wait until the Q&A to talk more about it. For now, have a look at the images.

I should be getting a review unit soon after the device becomes available outside Korea (end of February, according to UMID), so stay tuned for more.
