3G UMID mbook M1 MID status update
My friends at Justek sent me an update and a few photos (courtesy of UMPC Fever) of the upcoming 3G UMID mbook M1 MID. The unit is currently being tested in Hong Kong, where the 3G functionality is said to be "good and fast," and is headed to Justek in Australia next.
The full retail shipment, which was previously expected as early as this month, still doesn't have a firm ETA but the good news is that Justek isn't anticipating any inordinate delays and will keep Pocketables updated.
The units will be available in both black and white, with the former most likely being released after the latter due to what has turned out to be a slow process in getting the black keyboards made.
All of the 3G M1s, regardless of color, will be equipped with a 32GB SSD, Windows XP, SIM card slot, and the new finger-friendly UI shown in the first photo above. The rest of the specs will be the same as the original UMID M1: 1.33GHz Intel Atom Z520 CPU, 512MB RAM, 4.8-inch touchscreen (1024 x 600), 1.3-megapixel webcam, microSD card slot, WiFi, and Bluetooth.
In short, the wheels are in motion and the 32GB UMID M1 with 3G is still on track for a summer release. I'll be getting a black version as soon as it becomes available and will most likely be the first to test the 3G bands in the US, so stay tuned for more updates in the coming weeks/months.
