Hailing from Nanjing, China, Motom is a newcomer to MID/UMPC manufacturing that is looking to stake its claim in the tablet market that seems to be growing in choice by the day!
The just-announced Motom M7 MID runs Windows XP on a 1.1GHz Atom Z510 processor and has a 7-inch WSVGA touch screen. Other specifications include 1GB DDR2 RAM, a 32GB SSD, WiFi and 3G connectivity, GPS, a 1.3MP webcam, two USB ports, HDMI output, and a 4800mAh battery but no figures for the actual battery life. Apart from the touch screen, which we assume to be resistive indicated by the inclusion of a stylus and handwriting support, the M7 also includes a small touchpad in the bottom right surrounded by basic hardware buttons. The tablet measures a fairly svelte 7.9 x 5 x 0.9 inches (W x H x D). Unfortunately, no further information has been provided for price or release date, but we do know that the M7 is not alone in Motom's tablet stable.
The I7 (shown left and below) seems to only differ from the M7 in terms of design, with a slightly squarer shape, black bezel, silver body, an inbuilt kickstand, and various external components including the touchpad, webcam, and hardware buttons in different locations around the bezel. Overall I think I prefer the M7 over the I7 because of its simpler, neater, and more original design. Although it would be nice if we knew whether the M7 also included the useful inbuilt stand!
As for the M5, it also seems to be a Menlow platform device with what we assume to be similar specifications running Windows XP with WiFi, 3G, GPS, webcam, trackpad, etc., but unlike the M7 and I7, full specifications haven't been included on the website. The compact MID has a sleeker design, which is quite appealing and reminds be a bit of a handheld games console. The M5 will be available in either black or white as shown below.
Like the M7, there are also no release or pricing details for Motom's other MIDs. But clearly this newcomer seems intent on making its mark on the MID tablet market.
From a design point of view, the M5 and M7 look promising, but it would be nice if the hardware was a bit more powerful and I wouldn't mind seeing some additional OS options such as Windows 7 and Moblin. A lot also hinges on the final price, but I look forward to hearing more from Motom soon. What do you think of the M7, I7, and M5?
