Sign up for 24-hour Dell Streak US preorder opportunity

Streak-presale

Since the official product page is very light on details, Dell is letting you sign up for an "exclusive Dell Streak pre-sale opportunity."

In exchange for your name, email address, and/or phone number, the company will let you know when the device is available for preorder, give you a free upgrade to 2nd Business Day shipping, and let you buy a Plantronics Bluetooth headset for 99 cents.

That's a fine offer, sure, but it's hardly worthy of all the secrecy and hype leading up to the announcement.

  • Well atleast this is something to look forward to.

  • All the secrecy and hype to get myself on a list for a product that is seemingly exactly the same as the UK version that is already available.
Oh I guess the free shipping upgrade and coupon were the big secret.
I sure hope there’s something more lurking.

I agree … but I sign up anyways … and besides, I have a Dell PC, so they have my email address already (lol)

I find it odd they Offered a Headset. I assume the Beta Testing encouraged that? Do they feel a headset is needed? The Offer seems to emphasize it is too big to put next to your head?

Based on the limited info … there is no way I would buy it today, but signing up has no obligation to me … and if I do like the specs on release … any upgrade is nice!

I honestly think this is for all of us who have followed the Streak since it was the Mini 5 (an apology gift?), and since the Specs on this Promo are so vague, I will bet that more detail will show a much better Streak than the one released in the UK. If I am wrong, I will delete the email they send me, and wait for the Streak 2, or whatever the next generation will be called (this model has been around almost a year in the wild, so the next model must be very near … imo)

  • First looks at the US version of the Streak are popping up all over the place..TechCrunch, Engadget. Engadget is saying Android 1.6 is the final version for the US release and they ain’t happy about it.

Lionel Menchaca commented to the TechCrunch post making a fuss over this preorder to get a Streak before the general release….so I think this is the non-disappointing surprise they meant.

    Underwhelming….

  • Will Dell USA ship to Canada? I signed up for the email alert and will try to get them to ship it to me. I’ll pay the extra. Hope it works.

Odd that they would put just “Android (multi-touch)” for the OS listing. That could either mean they are still going to surprise us OR they feel no need to hype up 1.6. I’m guessing the latter since if it did have 2.2 they would be hyping that (i think).

So far everything Garriques (The guy at D8) said is true. Late July release and unlocked for around $500.

That only makes me actually pretty hopeful that it will have 2.2 in the fall. Probably get a custom ROM before then

i don’t think so Rob. Others have posted they have relatives/friends in the US so they just get it shipped there and do a visit to pick it up.

  • Living in Canada myself, I suspect not. I don’t remember what I tried to purchase before, but I had to go through the .ca website for Canadian address.

  • So the original “late July” launch date is holding true, bummer. We need Anna Chapman @ DellHQ to get us some better dirt on this thing.

I love the All-in-One concept. Hence my anticipation of this phone/tablet … but the reviews pouring in seem to imply nothing has changed from the UK … hence, this is old news, except for the size.

If the Streak is a ‘Fail’ … my hope for the next generation Streak, which could be out by Black Friday?, would include:

8M or above Camera (the ‘new’ minimum standard is 8)

1020p Recording (most all are 720p already)

2G or Dual Core Processor (Motorola is claiming to have a 2G and HTC Dual Core by end of year)

    Gingerbread (next after Froyo)

    HDMI and/or USB port

WiFi ‘n’ (most are ‘n’ already)

LTE/4G (Verizon will be LTE in November and will have 4G Sim Cards)

I could go on … but these will be the minimum … and lets hope they fire their ‘Marketing’ Staff, and hire a new one for the Streak 2!!!

  • 1020p recording is ridiculous from a cell phone. That would be the last thing I want. 720p from a cell phone is almost as silly.

“I could go on” … and thought I would:

    Tethering

1930mAH Battery (an announced option for Droid X)

The more I add … the less I want this old news Streak!!!

    Seth,

I agree with you … “from a cell phone”

… but this is supposed to be a Tablet/Cell Phone, and most monitors/TV’s are already 1080; and have been for a while.

YouTube just boosted its standard much higher … so looking ahead … 1080p will be standard … imo

  • Thanks for the info but can you order items from the US store through the Canadian one?

  • Unfortunately, it’s looking like Matt meant we wouldn’t be disappointed with the release date, meaning it would be very soon after the announcement instead of weeks away. But the vagueness of the announcement holds some hope that there will be a surprise or two in the actual US shipping version.

If not, I have some thinking to do. The proprietary port isn’t a big issue on it’s own, but coupled with the serious limitations of 1.6 and limited camera puts a significant dampening in my enthusiasm for it. Let’s hope it’s popular enough for the aftermarket to think it’s worth it to make third-party connectors for it.

  • Well it looks like Dell hasn’t won the race for my money yet. You can’t order the Streak through the Dell.ca website and Dell.com won’t ship to Canada. I don’t want a product that I will have trouble with warranty should I need it, so the wait continues.

WOW if they think a pre-order program makes us happy that we waited 8 months for a device that the UK already has then they are very out of touch with there customers

  • Good point, I was incredibly surprised to see the 1080 option on youtube which surprisingly works! BUT considering all WVGA (800×480) devices cannot even display the full 1280×720 I see absolutely no need 720p recording. Likewise, there are no phones that support 1920×1080 so I even more so see no need for 1080 recording from a mobile device. If you want high def video, purchase a Panasonic HVX and fall in love. Or for more compact, purchase the new Olympus Pen, which looks very promising.

I would be disgusted if I saw any professional recording done with a cell phone. In time, I do believe the cell phone industry will go more ‘Dell Streak’ but on steroids. I would love to see a full HD (either 720 or 1080) display on any cell phone device. Unfortunately the only devices currently supporting those resolutions are laptops.

  • While at an ATT store Sunday, a guy walked in, wanted a phone he could browse the web on. He had no idea what phones there were, no idea that there was a new iPhone out, no idea what Android was. The sales person walked him around for a few minutes describing what they had. In less than fifteen minutes he walked out with something, I didn’t see what. I envied him. No lurking around blogs waiting on disappointing scraps of info on products you’ve been following for a year, no worrying about what might come out next month. He just looked at what was there and bought something. Next to me, that man is a sage.

I don’t think it’s so much as watching 720P video on the phone as it would be a nice feature to take that recording 720P video from the phone and watch, edit or upload it somewhere.

do you think you could give us a full comparison between the streak and captivate? Complete with your opinion and suggestions with what we should buy and the advantages to each. I’ve been killing myself today about which to buy. I’m sure many are in the same boat. That would really be a huge help. Thanks.

    Reply
  • I heard a report that AT&T asked Dell not to release it until 30-32 days after the iP4 release so it didn’t initiate “return churn” from the first iP4 buyers.

This would make sense and lead one to believe that it will be released next week, probably pre-orders on Tuesday/Wednesday so early buyers can indeed get it before the end of July.

    Reply
  • Avatar of thedogscar

That may be a “report” … but the churn rate on the iPhone has historically been miniscule!!!

… and besides, who would drop the iPhones 4’s speedy system, for an antiquated 1.6, with the hope of 2.x, at a later date?

Steve Jobs referred to the Streak as a “Hummer” (and not the good kind) … Big, slow and consumes energy

The real question is … when do we get the Streak 2?!?!

    Reply
  • why get the Streak 2 when you can just keep waiting for the Streak 3? oh wait, there is no evidence that either one of those devices are even being planned.

here is another thought… if the first Streak flops, what is the incentive for Dell to make a 2nd generation device? unless they just truly believe in this form factor and are willing to admit that they completley messed up the marketing for the Streak, then i would say there is NO incentive.

  • Is there anything specific you want to know? I am unable to do a full spec-by-spec, feature-by-feature comparison due to time constraints (I generally only work after my baby girl has gone to sleep for the night so my working hours are limited, especially since I have 2 other sites), but I can do something that focuses on certain elements.
