Dell Streak featured on front cover of August catalog

Streak-august-catalog

Although the layout and content may have been finalized long before whatever happened that caused the US launch delays, the Dell Streak is on the front cover of this month's Dell Catalog. It's easy to miss if you just glanced at the catalog while flipping through your mail (about 75% of the cover is devoted to the new Inspiron 14R notebook) and even easier if you're not on Dell's mailing list, but you can see it now in the company's online e-catalog and even download the PDF.

There's no new information to be gleaned from the full page devoted to the Streak (no mention of AT&T either), but keen-eyed readers will notice the red trim (and the correct button placement) of the device in the in-hand image. There is an unsubstantiated rumor going around that the red Streak will be released in the US before the already-packaged black one because Dell is loading Android 2.1 onto it, so you could certainly read into the red unit's inclusion in the catalog if you wanted to.

Either way, it's a good sign that Dell is starting to promote the Streak to a wider audience. I don't know how many people get the catalog, but I'm sure it's more than the number of people who read tech blogs.

This is just smoke an mirrors, how many products received this kind of hipe before being killed, do you remember the Microsoft Courier ? Yeah, the product has been already released in UK and GE, but it doesn’t mean Dell won’t kill it as it happend with the Microsoft Kin.
Get an Samsumg Galaxy S and Kindle 3 to be happy.

I gave up waiting for this product.

It seems that Dell under estimated the interest in this product and subsequently made poor design/marketing decisions.

I got myself a Samsung Capativate and will probably get some type of Android table before the end of the year, but it won’t be a Dell.

Gave up here also too many delays whether it’s AT&T’s fault or not too little too late onto the galaxy tablet at 7 inches with a real release date! ITs been fun reading here but no more I’m outta here later all!

I am going to hang in there, at least until either the Streak or Galaxy Tablet, whichever comes first, is available. Out of sheer frustration with Dell, I tried using an HTC Evo a few days ago, and while it is a great phone, the screen is just a shade too small for me, so I returned it.
Thanks for this blog Jenn, I check it at least twice a day…

    Hi Jenn,
Can you please post about the usage of the Streak as a Navigation device? What I would like to know more is while the Streak is being used as a navigation device in the car, what happens when you get a phone call? Do the two work simultaneously? Do the two work well together? It would be great if you could test this out and post on it.
And thanks for all your awesome work on Streak….love this site!!

Phew! Was getting worried as a UK user that this wasn’t going to ever be seen again. My only concern is that this catalog would have to be approved a while ago so that it could be printed. I.e. when the phone was going to be released US side in July time a couple of weeks ago, I don’t know paranoia is getting to me lol. Want my updates to iron out the creases of the phone.

I would bet more people read tech blogs than those who get that mag. Releasing the red with 2.100.00 would be awesome but i’m not betting on that one. Dell obviously doesn’t pay attention to what the potential buyers think so I guess it’s okay to assume they wont.

Something is happening — clicking on the pre-sale link now produces an Internal Server Error . . . could this finally be the launch??

It would be nigh-impossible to upgrade to 2.1/2.2 before the US launch — it comes down to simple logistics: they would have to power up every streak sitting in stock-rooms or warehouses around the country in order to make that happen — given that AT&T are already rather uncooperative, this rather unlikely. What they could do, however, is move up the date for the over-air update to shortly after the launch.

Since giving up on the Streak, I’ve been *very* happy with the Captivate which has me really excited to hear Samsung’s news on the 11th. A 7″ version of the Galaxy with 1024×600 resolution and a 4,000mAh battery? YES PLEASE!

I think you’re a little confused cporter. The Courier was never announced, let alone marketed by Microsoft. In fact, it may never have made it past the prototype stage (Libretto W100 perhaps).

Google Maps navigation is really great on the 5″ screen. Since we have the AT&T 3G model (which should be sold someday…) you can talk while navigation is actively using data. However, while you’re on a call voice prompts for turns will be disabled until your phone call ends.

All AT&T or Dell would have to say when selling the phone or include it in the box instructions to release through OTA. With knowledge of 2.1 being released we probably won’t see the phone in North America till they have a final build of 2.1 ready for the OTA

The issue isn’t being patient. I passed on the Captivate and waited an extra couple of weeks for the Streak. The issue for me was Dell’s handling. Essentially, they lied when they went back on the July release date. This would be understandable if they had not already launched it in another country. This mishandling rose serious questions about Dell’s future support for this phone. I would certainly like a 5″ screen, but not that badly.
