The HTC EVO 4G is often criticized for its poor battery life but a new Android battery test created by LAPTOP shows that on relatively level playing field, the EVO puts up a higher number than some of its contemporaries. It still falls below average, yes, but not by very much.
The test opens the stock browser to 1 of 60 predetermined websites, stays there for a minute, closes the browser, and then reopens it to the next website on the list. This is done solely over 3G (WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, sync, and location services are all turned off) and repeated until the phone dies. LAPTOP ran the test twice on each device and averaged the results, which you see in the chart above. It isn't a scientific test, no, but given that as many variables as possible were eliminated (no Flash or other plug-ins, screen brightness set at 40%, auto-brightness turned off), I'd say it certainly gets the job done.
We know that there are ways to extend the EVO's battery life (e.g., tips, calibration) and LAPTOP's test only measures 3G runtime, but considering that all the phones were tested under the same conditions, coming in fifth isn't too bad, especially for a device that's practically become the poster child for bad battery life.
