How to use your own videos as HTC EVO live wallpaper

Evo-vlwp

We already know how to create our own live wallpapers using a bunch of static PNG images. Now let's do it using real videos.

If you've already got some videos loaded up on your HTC EVO's microSD card, then you'll be able to use them as a standard swipable live wallpaper in a matter of seconds.

Find out how to do it on your EVO below.

1. Download Video Live Wallpaper from Android Market or scan the QR code below.

2. Tap the Menu button on your EVO and press Wallpaper -> Live wallpapers. Scroll down and select "Video Live Wallpaper" from the list.

Tap "Video file or directory" at the top of the list to select the video, folder, or subfolder you want. As you can see in the screenshot, I've got mine set to a 30 Rock season 4 subfolder inside my main Videos folder. All of my videos are XviDs wrapped in AVI containers, but many other video formats are supported as well.

Adjust additional settings according to your preferences. Highlights include being able to randomize playback, shift/pan the video in typical Android wallpaper fashion (i.e., parallax effect), and prioritize video quality or swiping animation smoothness. Settings not shown in the screenshot at right are Swiping Lag (instant, fast, normal, slower, slow), Debug Mode (which the dev recommends that you keep disabled), Help, Changelog, and About.

Once you have everything set up to your liking, tap the EVO's Back button then the "Set wallpaper" button at the bottom of the screen.

And that's it.

If your video doesn't start playing the first time, you may have to select "Video Live Wallpaper" from your live wallpapers list again, which is what I had to do. Videos play without sound in portrait mode with HTC Sense and will rotate to landscape mode after a brief pause with a third-party home launcher like LauncherPro.

It's not practical to use a TV show or movie as a live wallpaper, but a short video you shot yourself or a clip of your favorite show/movie/music video/whatever could be pretty sweet.
