Mountek MT5000 mounts HTC EVO 4G in car’s CD player slot

Evo-car-dock-cd If you can't remember the last time you got into your car and put in a CD (that's a compact disc, youngins!), then that slot in your head unit probably isn't doing much more than collecting dust.

Why not use it as a car mount for your HTC EVO 4G instead?

The Mountek MT5000 mount slips into the CD slot (or any other thin groove in the dashboard) and uses no suction cups, screws, clips, or adhesives. The adjustable cradle is attached to the mount via a ball hinge for easy viewing angle positioning. Installation requires no tools or windshield/dash space and can be done in seconds, as shown in the video below.

Mountek-mt5000

Mountek says that the MT5000 provides a firm, stable, and secure mount for most handheld devices, "even in off road or rough water conditions," and will not "bounce around" like other mounts.

The mount is available from a number of retailers for $19.95 each.

  • Wow this looks great! Put’s the EVO in a very convenient location without putting sticky stuff or screws into your dash board. I would be apt to getting this if I know it will hold my “chunky” Evo with the Ballistic HC case. Other mounts do not open up wide enough to fit the extra girth added to my phone.

If anyone has this please let me know if it opens up much wider than the phone.

  • EDIT – I just saw on their website and it states “The cradle has a maximum spread of 4.375″ which is PERFECT!! My evo has a width of almost 3.25” with the case. I will be picking this mount up today!!

  • Anybody know what that case is on the evo from the picture above? It looks clear and cool I want it!

I have had one for a month and absolutely love it. It sits right next to the aux port on my raido and I can’t tell you how organized it makes my set up look. I don’t know how I lived without it.

ordered!! exactly what I’ve been looking for. Thanks Jenn for the heads up.

  • I feel like the placing of it is perfect (as long as your CD player is high enough) but just be careful with the radio buttons behind your mount now! I can see someone looking down at their radio and around the mount to look for a radio button while driving!

I got excited when I saw this, because I’ve been looking for some kind of mount that could install into the DIN slot where a stereo head unit would usually go. My setup completely skips a head unit, and instead my Evo goes directly to the amp and out to the speakers. Sadly, this isn’t what I was looking for, but it’s very cool nonetheless.

Anyone seen something like this that actually goes IN PLACE of the head unit instead of just attaching to it?

I used to have a Garmin Zumo 550 (motorcycle mount) – I wonder if they could make a mount for bikers as the phone is as large as the Zumo display was if not larger.

Does anyone know if this works with the extended battery?

  • It’s a good idea. I use a $3 suction windshield mount that I purchased from one of our shopping mall’s little cell phone acccessories booth. It’s nice because I can move the phone from the windshield to the (closed)sun roof and let my three-year-old watch movies or move it to the passenger side… With the CD option, you’re stuck with one position–yours.

  • Looks like a clear TPU case like the Amzer ones i bought on amazon. I think the back is argyle pattern. i recommend the name brand Amzer ones because the cheap knock off ones have a rough squared edge that hurts my ear where as the real ones are soft and rounded

You can find it on EBAY for $17.95+$2.95 shipping.

  • Just ordered it from Amazon $19.95 + free shipping. I like the concept, I rarely get anybody in my back seat so for me and the passenger it’s all fun. I have PlaysVideo so it puts the Evo in the right viewing spot.

Yeah… Looks nice… provided your car does have heater vents right above your CD player that are frequently uses for blowing … well heat. You are not supposed to heat up electronic devices. A lot of them are designed to even turn themselves off or reboot if their internal temperature gets too hot (which I believe the EVOs, Droids, and Galaxys do). So then add in an external heating source blowing directly on the back/battery of the device.

    … I’m just saying. =)

To add… just watched the video. So in my case, the choice is to either block my entire stereo (which is not bluetooth or USB capable for those thinking I would use the EVO for music). – OR – reverse the mount and block the heater vents and thus heat up the EVO significantly when using the heater.

As cool as it seems… I would need a new car to support my EVO habit. =)

  • I have this too (per a suggestion on XDA) and love it. It definitely blocks your stereo, but I don’t really use the stereo much (I plug into the inline). The mount did block the volume button and made it so it was almost unusable. I emailed Mountek (who have great customer service btw) and they suggested I mount it updside down….and it worked! The volume button was free and I had better access to my stereo buttons.

The nice thing about this mount is that it really is mounted right in a perfect position. I keep thinking about trying to hack this thing to use hold my powermat, plugged into the lighter, so that I can have a wireless charging solution in my car!

  • I’m guessing it would work fine with the extended battery. The grip on the sides is very tight and the EVO sits snuggly back.

  • Still will work good for me. I always send the heat to the windows (defrost) and the floor vents. I use the dash board vents for the A/C (cool). The website shows photos of the mount positioned inverted so the volume button is not blocked. This concept may not work for all, but it will be nice for many.
Additionally the instructions say it can be placed in other locations in the dash with a small space.

  • – Def makes sense to me as I don’t think I’ve changed the CDs in my in-dash CD changer for months.

    – The CD slot on my car dash sits above the stereo controls and vents, so this should work well for me.

    – The mount places the Evo at the most convenient location of the center console (as most cars have the stereo system in the most easy to reach location on the center console.)

Ordered one today. I’ve been making do with a cheap-o mount from eBay so I’m expecting this mount to work 10x better.

  • Got it today. Fits very nicely. I detached the bottom bracket for a centered horizontal position.

Dave- don’t get the amzer case. I had it for a few months and it the pressure it put on the power button would periodically turn off my phone (almost daily – so annoying) when I intended to wake the phone up.

  • Just got mine yesterday, and I love it! What a great invention. I couldn’t pull the trigger on buying a mount until now, because I just didn’t want some crazy contraption on my dash, window, cup holder, etc. It’s right where I need it.

Not sure what you’re talking about? I looked at Amazon and it’s still $20!

I stand corrected. There is another reseller trying to sell it for $40 plus shipping but “Mountek” still shows it for $20.

  • I ordered mine thru Amazon, got the $19.99 price w/ free shipping. Ordered it on a Friday nite, was shipped on Saturday from California, got it here in San Antonio on Monday!

I’ve got the extended 3500 battery & case, and it works. Grabs my EVO securely, doesn’t bounce around. My EVO was almost too thick due to the battery, but it squeezes tight enough with the foam inside the adjustable sides to hold it.

I detached the bottom piece that could be used to keep the phone from sliding down. It want needed, and it got in my way for plugging in my power cable.

You can insert a cd before inserting this holder, but don’t eject it without taking this holder out first. :) The bracket does obstruct my view of the radio display, but that doesn’t bother me.

have been using mine for 2 weeks… very happy with it. I have an Otterbox commuter series and the MT5000 still has no issues holding my EVO in tightly. the way i use mine (situated below the cd slot rather than above) it does cover up my radio preset keys, but i rarely use those anyway. overall i give it 8/10 and for the price paid, 10/10

Got one and installed it in seconds in my Mini. Location is perfect with aux line connected. Tends to bounce more than I expected, but phone/media use isn’t affected and the mount hasn’t budged. Also, once mounted the phone can be angled toward driver or passenger and up and down a little. Overall, this is a nice design and simple solution.

I finally got mine from Amazon today after quite a wait. First off the ball swivel mount was not even attached, it was actually broken off and cant be screwed back on. Next thing the expandable arms didn’t move on their own at all. I had to actually pry them with quite a bit of force. It seems I just got a lemon though.

I ordered mine directly from Mountek. Actually ordered 2 only got one in the mail within 48 hours. Thought maybe they only shipped one and the other was on backorder since this holder is the best thing to happen to a smartphone since the EVO. When I emailed Mountek Customer Service the guy emailed me back from his phone and told me he would send me one right out within just a couple minutes. That was yesterday and I would bet it either shows up today or tomorrow.

  • Hello All, on behalf of all of us here at Mountek, we give our sincere gratitude for the generous reviews and support you’ve given for our invention. As of this past weekend, we’ve completely SOLD OUT! So you will likely not find any in stock on eBay, Amazon, Buy.com. However, we are accepting pre-orders for our next lot of the MT5000 on our website. Just to keep you in the know, we have a new and improved model going into full production this summer, the MT6000. This one should solve some of the incompatibility issues with CD slots of various makes/models/sizes and introduce a few other mounting locations as well. Thanks again for the incredible feedback!

I purchased the Mountek Universal mount for my iPhone 3 and it also works on my iPhone 4. My wife has an HTC Android Incredible and that phone also fits perfectly. In my opinion it is the best iphone car mount on the market. It is only $19.95 & the fact that so many devices fit it makes it more than worth it. The really cool feature is the mount has a blade for the mounting and fits any CD slot w/o ruining your CD player and fits most grooves in the car. So, it will fit within any groove in the Dash. Now that is super cool tech.
