Stabilize your official Apple iPad case with this ring binder mod
The official Apple iPad case is one of the most popular cases out there, if not for anything else than the fact it’s sold everywhere. I like it because it is lightweight yet offers good protection and it has a built in stand feature which is very useful when you want to type on it. In “stand mode” it can be propped up at two different angles, but when propped up in “laptop mode” (standing up) it’s not exactly the most stable thing out there. This is a simple mod that stabilizes it in this position, and it will only cost you a couple of bucks and 10 minutes of cutting and gluing.
First off you need a ring binder, or something else that has a large, stiff surface area that you can easily cut. Ring binders are very cheap so I went with that for mine.
Cut out a decent surface area larger than the iPad itself . You can use tape to cover the exposed cardboard edges or leave a small flap like in this picture to fold around and glue on top.
Cut out a second, smaller piece and glue the short sides of it to the larger piece, leaving the middle part open- like a hand strap, sort of. Make sure you make it the right width for its purpose, which you’ll see below.
Slide in the flap of the iPad case and prop it up in stand mode. If everything works fine it should now be safe to put on a tablet without a passing house fly accidentally knocking it over. If you want a smaller solution to the same problem, dim3m has a nice solution. It costs a little bit more, but takes up less space as well. The advantage of doing the ring binder version is that you can put the whole setup on your lap without the whole thing falling off, because of the large surface area of the ring binder. You can also put the case into typing mode and use it on your lap that way, which gets rid of the problem of having to squeeze your legs together to prevent the iPad from falling in between your legs.
