Official Apple iPad case elastic strap mod

apple case band main - for some reason we don't have an alt tag here

I think the official Apple iPad case is great; it has a built in stand capability, it protects the iPad screen when in a bag, is very low profile and also has great drop protection (aka those edges that 95% of people don’t understand the point of). It does lack one thing however: an elastic strap that stops the lid from flapping about everywhere. This is something that most similar cases have, and something that is easily added for practically no money.

To do this mod you need an elastic strap. You can get one from a lot of different places, be it a tailor show, some old pair of sweat pants or whatever. I simply went to the closest book shop and bought a cheap cardboard binder with an elastic strap to hold it together.

Whatever strap you pick, it should be elastic enough to fire angry little birds at green pigs.

I chose to use the existing cutout for the screen lock button and widen one of the cutouts for the speaker in order to get the elastic strap through the side of the case while making as few physical modifications as possible.

I recommend stretching the elastic strap a bit and clamping the two ends together so you don’t have to fight the elasticity while you use a needle and thread to sew the ends together. Do  Make sure it’s tight enough so the strap has a nice snap to it on the back of the case. Also, remember to sew the ends together AFTER you thread the ends through the sides of the case. Lastly, if you’re using a flat strap like I am, make sure you don’t twist and sew it together while twisted.

Your end result should look something like this. This part will go behind the iPad anyways so it won’t be visible.

Slide the iPad back in, and you should have something like this. The band will hold the lid securely to the iPad both on the front and on the back, making it easier to handle both when open and when closed.
