I am usually never happy for very long with the custom ROM I have on my HTC EVO 4G, so I always end up flashing a new one. But ever since CyanogenMod 7 (CM7) was released, I can say for the first time in 6 months that I think I want to stick with this ROM for as long as I own my EVO.

CM7 now has 4G working, and there are no more major bugs to worry about. It’s based on Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has some really cool features besides the screen on/off animation. There’s 360-degree rotation, the status icons and notification bar are both customizable, and there is even a theme app to switch the color of the notification icons from green to cyan blue (for now). There are also camera options that let you snap photos with the search button and zoom in/out with the volume rocker. You can also use the volume rocker to switch tracks while playing music when the screen is off.

Oh, and don’t forget about WiMAX!

The only thing that doesn’t work right now is HDMI. But again, if you are like me, then you almost never really use this feature anyway. Besides, all you can do at the moment with HDMI is play YouTube videos and show pictures/videos you took on your TV. The good news is that HDMI mirroring is now possible on Sense-based ROMs, and the Cyanogen team has said that they are making progress on implementing mirroring on a future nightly build too. So, I can wait.

Bottom line? To me, CM7 is the best ROM for the HTC EVO out there . . . and I flash a lot of ROMs. The only thing holding me back from staying with previous versions of CyanogenMod was the lack of 4G because I’m impatient loading YouTube videos on 3G, and now that is a thing of the past.

I think it’s the perfect ROM for the perfect phone.
