Reader ROM Picks: Calkulin’s EViO 2 for HTC EVO

The HTC EVO 4G is built for speed, a need that young and old both want—the young because that’s just how they are and the old (me) because they’ll forget what they were doing without it. I need that speed, but I also need reliability. I use my EVO for multiple work tasks and my work only gets paid for if it’s done correctly. I’ve tried multiple ROMs but always go back to Calkulin’s EViO 2 because it’s fast and everything works every day.

When a rare force close happens, it is generally the fault of an app. I’ve updated to Calkulin’s next release without doing a full wipe before and when weird things start happening, I uninstall/reinstall an app or do a full wipe and reload and voila it’s a smooth operator again. In other words, when problems occur within the ROM, it’s rarely (if ever) the ROM’s fault. The idea is not to let an issue turn into a subscription. I have found this ROM to be more reliable than a stock set up.

EViO gives you a choice of a Sense launcher or ADW.Launcher and lets you use most Sense apps (or not). There are also little bleeding edge conveniences like remapping the search button to an app, a sleep switch, drop-down power bar customization, and built-in tinting settings.

One of the best things about this ROM is that when you tap an icon, you are there about 99.9% of the time. You never worry about having too many background apps open; it is fast!

I currently use a Ziggy beta kernel and the EViO v1.7.7 release (my first flash was v1.1 in September; the current release is v1.8). I overclock the CPU to 1190MHz, which gives me a 1357 Quadrant score. I’ve flashed other kernels, hoping to clock it to 1220MHz, but so far loss of reliability seems to occur at 1220. My mantra is to do a Nandroid backup (tutorial here) weekly and always before a change!

I like the way Calkulin updates too. He does it regularly (about two a month), you know exactly what has changed, and he offers overrides to further customize. He also provides good guidelines and definitely doesn’t have an elitist rock star attitude.
