Nook Color gets official Froyo love, other goodies from latest update

Although the BlackBerry PlayBook has been getting a lot of attention lately, there are of course many other good 7" tablets on the market too. If you want to see Android on that screen, then the B&N Nook Color is one of the best choices due in part to its great hardware (review here).

The device used to require some amount of hacking to reach its full potential, but that is no longer the case thanks to a major update released today by Barnes & Noble, which can be grabbed from the company's website.

This update changes quite a few things. First and foremost, the previous Android 2.1 (Eclair) base has now been replaced with Android 2.2 (Froyo). Froyo brings Flash 10.2 to the tablet, along with a low level speed boost. Barnes & Noble has also added the ability to install certain Android apps on the device, although it still lacks the official Market. Some notable apps highlighted as being available in the "Nook Appstore" include Angry Birds, Pulse News, and Lonely Planet. The update also adds "LendME" and "Nook Friends" for reading with friends.

I had a Nook Color earlier this year but sold it due to the unfinished ROMs and lack of stock features. With this update, the e-reader/tablet is looking a lot better. I am almost convinced to return to it from my Viewsonic G Tablet, even though the G Tablet has better specs. But if you're in the market for a good 7" Android tablet right now, this update has made the Nook into something you should definitely look in to. And if this update is any indication, it will only keep getting better.
