Root no longer needed for HDMI mirroring on HTC EVO

Full-hdmi-evo-noroot

If your HTC EVO 4G isn't rooted, then it's used to not being able to do what all the other rooted EVOs get to do. Purity ring-wearing handsets have never met a new custom ROM or kernel, made a Nandroid backup, changed its LCD density or system fonts, pretended to be a Motorola Atrix 4G, or boosted SD card read speeds. And up until a few days ago, a stock EVO has never been able to see its display mirrored on a huge screen over HDMI.

But now it can. FullHDMI ($2.99), the first app in the Market that enabled full HDMI mirroring on the EVO, was recently updated to version 1.3.1 and no longer requires root access or a custom kernel for general functionality.

A special kernel is only needed for 720p output (800×600 and lower resolutions will work out of the box) and if you want to be able to output the audio from the EVO. Without this kernel, every stock unrooted EVO can mirror 800×600 and output audio over HDMI.

Who said only the rooted kids get all the cool stuff?
