Been There, ROMed That: Synergy ROM (nightlies) for HTC EVO 4G

Guest contributer Nick West (@TechManWest) is back with another installment of G&E’s HD video series Been There, ROMed That. This time, he shows us an awesome invitation-only ROM known as Synergy created by an extraordinary group of devs that includes myn and XxXViRuSXxX.

The guys teamed up with one goal in mind: “to create one of the best Android ROMs ever.” As such, Synergy is based on several different platforms and packed with Gingerbread 2.3.3 and HTC Sense 2.1 with Sense 3.0 features.

Even though it’s still only in the early nightlies phase, it’s already sleek and fast. 4G, WiFi, Bluetooth, hotspot, both cameras, and just about anything else you want and need are all working too. I’m not sure what the ETA on a public release is but based on what I’ve seen so far, Team Synergy is well on the way to achieving its goal.

  • I didn’t watch the video yet, but I can say that Synergy is smooth and runs very well. I am actually flashing the 6/10 nightly now and I have run the past 4 nightly builds without major issue. This is my daily driver right now and I can’t wait for the final build and then see how Myn folds his Warm goodness into it.

  • I’m unrooted and watching this video makes me want to install this when its released to the public. I love what I’ve seen of sense 3.0 and I’d love to have free hotspot. However this phone is going to my dad and I’m grabbing a 3d on launch day so my Rom flashing is going to wait.

  • W.O.W!

That ROM looks pretty much like exactley what I want my Evo to be! I hope to be able to check it out one day!

Did I say “wow” yet? ;)

  • Do sprint apps work on this rom?

I love this rom! Its smooth, looks great and is very stable (unlike some of the other Sense 2.1/3.0 hybrid roms out there). My only lament (which is not any of the developers fault at all)is that Netflix does not work with it. Until then, I’ll probably stick with MIUI, but if that is not a deal breaker for you then you can’t get a better Sense based rom.

  • I was just going to post that. I’m running MikG and it has all these elements so I’m not sure what the fuss is about. Virus himself has already put out a rom with all these features. Both Virus’ version and MikG are pretty darn stable IMO. The only issue I have is the battery life, not sure if its the Sense 3.0 elements, but in battery usgae my Display stay around 50%. Anyone else running one of htese roms seeing that?

Have any of you tested the WiiMote apps to see if the newer version of Sense has a better bluetooth stack?

  • +1 on Syn nightly. Not Rc yet but already extremely equipped for a daily driver. I have been running Synergy almost exclusively since it came out. This will help a lot of people(including me) be able to stretch the OG Evo life untill they can afford or upgrade to 3d.

  • Dude…I don’t think those nightlies should on blast like that.

    Reply
  • I wonder if Myn is ok with having that link to his nightlies in the comments.

    Reply
  • Probably not, but its also probably not wise to post a review of a ROM that isn’t even in beta testing. If people want this now, go to the Mik’s site and grab it.

  • aamikam, who is the developer of MikG is also one of the devs on Synergy. The main goal of the Synergy team is to develop a rock solid base which works across several devices that custom ROM developers and theme makers can then adapt for their own uses. MikG as it is currently setup may have many of the elements that are present within Synergy but as I understand it there are also things which have not made it from the Synergy builds into any other Final custom ROMs.

    Does Netflix work on it?

    Reply
  • I believe that Netflix does not currently work with any ROM based on the latest Gingerbread release. It’s a Netflix issue not a ROM issue.

    Reply
  • It’s a Netflix issue in that Netflix has to release a fix for the EVO running Gingerbread.

    Reply
  • This rom has been on public pages and hosting sites for awhile. Not like it’s been a big secret. The Synergy Rom thread for the HTC Incredible at XDA even links to all the nightlies, including the Evo 4G version.

supersonic is for the EVo, correct? the post is fot the incredable, not the EVO. the post path is for HTC > Incred… and the post says “1.Download Rom (make sure you get the incredilbe version and not the supersonic)” but I believe the Supersonic version if for the EVO.

can I get a little clarity here?

  • Having a real problem loading this rom from the links listed above. I clear cache/davlik and use clockworkmod to install zip. Install seems to go well. I get so many fc’s on various apps, I can’t keep track. I am able to restart to recovered. I am running latest gingerbread (rooted)update with no problems. ANY IDEAS!! Thanks

  • …And he wanted it there, Myn would’ve posted them himself? No?

    Reply
  • From the video this seems to be one of the most amazing roms I have ever seen! Before the Gingerbread update I was using Sprint Lovers Rom but sadly Chris went over to the iPhone :(.

  • and if he really wanted it to be kept by invitation only, he wouldn’t have put it up on a open public hosting site, no?

C’mon man, let’s not make this into a tattletale thread. Myn obviously knows many people outside his invites have access to the rom and nightlies. If he was that upset about it, this whole article wouldn’t be up. If someone is willing to risk installing a pre-beta rom that’s out there, then that’s their option.

    Reply
  • Yes, the Evo 4G is also knowns as the Supersonic.

    Reply
  • Install the rom from the bootloader, not Rom manager. Make sure you back up and wipe everything.

    Reply
  • The CM7 gingerbread is based on the early leak not the official Sprint release.Netflix is broken in the official release.

    Reply
  • Netflix is broken on GB with Sense. If you run Netflix on an AOSP ROM with GB, it works. So in short, its not GB= No Netflix, its Sense+GB=No Netflix

  • I have tried this by renaming file to PC36IMG.zip. The bootloaded finds the file; but indicated that is incorrect. I reloaded the file, renamed, same result. I know you have to use this process for updating radios etc. I am curious why you have to load this rom from bootloader. I have tried many other ROM’s using ROM Manager and have had no problems. Is there a specific kernel you need? I am using 2.6.35.10-g4e3984. Thanks to all that respond

    Reply
  • The rom comes with a kernal, so nothing specific. Not sure why it isn’t working for you. Another nightly just dropped though. Maybe try installing that one instead? I tried installing via rom manager the first time around, and it froze at the bootup screen. When I installed from recovery, it worked fine. I’m using nightly from 6/9. The 6/10 nightly caused gtalk and a few other programs to force close constantly for me.

  • Just flashed this today, after running CM7 nightlies for a long time. I couldn’t go back to Sense without the GB treats that I got used to from Cyanogen. Synergy looks to be what I’ve been waiting for. It’s really a sweet Sense ROM, best I’ve seen. I used to run Myn Warm before CM and this is more great work from him and his crew.

(I added Steven Lin’s GB keyboard from the market and made it even better.)

  • for all those complaining about the link to the nightlies.. i think you should all take a little medication called stopbeingalittlebitch. its not like the link is taking money out of myn’s or any other devs pocket and if someone wants to install a pre-beta rom its up to them. calm the hell down.

  • i used this rom for a few days and i loved it. a lot. the one major draw back was battery life, its pretty terrible. but in my few days of running Synergy it seems to be the ONLY negative thing. at least the only thing i could find. im currently on the OMFGingerbread rom until Synergy gets the battery issue sorted out

  • I’m STUCK! In need of some major help!… So I clicked on one the links above (http://android-addicts.org/board/showthread.php?520-ROM-Synergy-Rom-Nightlies-Sense-2.1-3.0-Progress-Towards-RLS1-6-2-11),

I mistakenly downloaded and flashed synergy-incredible-06092011.zip

*NOTE* I flashed HTC INCREDIBLE version. Everything looked as if it went smoothed flashing the ROM but when i rebooted the phone it stays stuck at the HTC EVO 4G white screen??? Also when I removed the battery & try accessing recovery mode through bootloader once i scroll down to RECOVERY, after pressing the power button all the EvO does is goes into fastboot. What have i done to my perfectly Rooted EVO!?

  • @ [email protected] IM IN THE SAME FREAKING BOAT. I CALLED AND ORDER ME ANOTHER DAMN PHONE CAUSE THAT SHI* BRICK MY PHONE

    Reply
  • There should be a way around it! Technically, a phone is considered “bricked” once it is completely unresponsive. It shouldnt even turn on! I just need a different way (if any) to accesss clockworkmod so that i can restore my phone to a previous state.

@ Mo- when you contacted sprint, what exactly did you say to them? Did you have to pay $100-150 deductible?

  • Hey, I think I can help. I had the same issue once with the recovery going to flash boot. You just have to download a different recovery program to you memory card and erase the one your using. It fixed my evo when I had the same issue with a jacked up rom install once. Your phones are not bricked. the recovery program your using is just corrupted. Just don’t download the same recovery program, use a different one. I hope that helps.

  • Well I just flashed the 06/12/11 nightly over my 06/10/11 one last night. And to tell you the truth, I can’t tell the difference, lol.

  • Here is a link to the changelog for the Synergy base. You can see the date of the changes and figure out the nightly to which they belong.

I’ve been seeing minimal changes made lately so I am only flashing a new nightly when I see something substantive come along.

  • I liked Sense at 1st on the stock ROM but after rooting & settling on AOSP, I have no desire to go back to Sense. So much less flexibility, larger ROM size, etc. I don’t need the whizbangs of the weather widget & the fancy lock screen (I disable the lock screen).

So I am just curious (no snark, honestly curious), what is it about Sense that people love so much? CM7 or other AOSP users, what made you go back to Sense?

    Reply
  • I’ve been using MIUI and CM7 ever since rooting my phone last October. I loved MIUI, but the english dev porters split up and the source is closed and there is no 4G in sight so I got off that. I was on CM7 for a while until I flashed this ROM this past weekend. I like CM7 alot, but the GPS was never consistent (I had to toggle GPS before I loaded up nav or maps- I did the GPSCLRX fix as well), and it bugged the heck out of me. I also think the AOSP lockscreen is really ugly. I like Sense’s style (new lockscreen, phone, calendar, alarm and how you set the times w/ the rolling numbers) and everything just works. I use GO launcher + beautiful widgets + android agenda + pure messenger though. I do miss the style of the settings in the notification bar in CM and MIUI, but I have a feeling I’ll be able to flash something soon for this ROM to have the same effect.

  • Love this ROM btw- everything works and it’s pretty *pets phone*

  • Much thanks to the guys working on this rom, it is much appreciated.

But for right now, I have to back to CM7, not being able to use the vol button to take photos is a deal breaker for me (all roms should default to holding the volume and releasing to take a photo, makes a world of difference.) and the battery life in downright brutal, I can go all day and night without charging on CM7.

The 3.0 lock screen is great on this rom, except for not supporting the amazon cloud player controls. This rom is becoming close to being the best ever, Just not yet.

Keep up the great work guys!

  • Try the 6/15/2011 update. They’ve addressed the battery issue, which was an issue that was happening with the stock gingerbread.

  • Yep, from what i understand the nightlies are automatic and don’t necessarily mean changes have been made. Keeping track of the change log is your best bet.

MikG is acutally on the Synergy team as well, plus I have MikG’s Rom also and it similar but Synergy has more bells and whistles and that was at the 6.7 release.

Easy fix would be to rename a Rom or a recovery like Ra or Clockwork mod as PC36IMG.zip then place it on your sd card. Launch into recovery mode the phone will search the sd card for the file and ask you to load it. you load it and you’re back in business.

Who knows since Myn is not the only one on the team, but the information is public via his site and because of it they are getting a ton of information and quick turn around time on additions and fixes. Plus I would have to assume it is someone from the team since as soon as the Rom goes up, the changelog is updated.

  • Five days later, I still like the ROM. Couple of things I miss about CM7: granular configuration and savagedzen kernel / longer battery life.

Still, the ROM is gorgeous and fast. I’ve always liked Sense more than AOSP. Very curious to see where it all goes. I’ll keep my eye on CM and Vaelpak, but my daily driver will be Synergy for a while.

Mik is not on the team, this is coming from Mik himself. He says he helped myn some and they used some apks but he is not on the team developing with them. Just wanted to clear up any misunderstanding.

I like the fact that everything works as it should with no special work arounds to be done, and the overall user interface looks better than stock Android in my opinion. MIUI is nice but still it’s AOSP and not everything seems to work perfectly, especially the damn voicemail thing. I’ve given AOSP plenty of chances but I just can’t get into it with all the small glitches that there are since it’s not what the Evo was made for, and my signal seems lower on AOSP ROMs. There are Sense ROMs out these days just as fast and have the equivalent battery life so there is really no point unless you just like the interface.
