DroidDreamLight: Dell Streak's newest nightmare

This guest article was written by Alex Winzenread.

Any avid reader of StreakSmart will be able to recall this March’s DroidDream outbreak, a virus afflicting Android phones that came packaged into seemingly legitimate Android apps from the Market. DroidDream used a fork exploit, the same kind of exploit used by popular rooting tool SuperOneClick, to attempt to root Android phones so the app could gather personal information.

Well, a new virus has found its way onto the Market, and once again, Dell Streak and Streak 7 users everywhere have found themselves potentially under the crosshairs.

This new virus, dubbed DroidDreamLight, is essentially a stripped-down version of the original DroidDream trojan and is likely to have been created by the same developers. Unlike its predecessor, however, DroidDreamLight doesn't require you to even open the application it came with to activate itself on your Streak!

When an app containing DroidDreamLight is downloaded onto an Android phone, it automatically launches itself when your device's state is changed (i.e., when you receive a phone call) and sends out your personal information to a remote server, including your IMEI, IMSI, your phone’s model, and information about packages installed on your Streak. The new trojan also seems to be capable of installing new packages on your Streak without your consent, a feature of which the original DroidDream virus was not thought to be capable.

All the apps containing this virus have already been removed from the Market, but the experts at Lookout Mobile Security believe that "between 30,000 and 120,000 users have been affected" by this new virus. A full list of affected apps, and the developers who perpetrated them, is available below.
