First look at Windows 8

Microsoft has posted a first look at Windows 8, which will be the first Windows OS that actually works well on tablets. The big difference is that Windows 8 is basically a new OS that runs on top of a Windows 7-like OS. WIndows 8 apps look more like Android/iOS/etc apps that run in fullscreen and make away with toolbars and all that. Underneath all that, you have the legacy Windows experience. Take a look at the video above to see how it all works.

It all looks good, but the main question is going to be performance requirements. If you cannot run Windows 8 on a tablet that weighs 6-700 gramsm is fan-less and runs for 8-10 hours on a 25Wh battery, then it’s still going to result in bulky tablets that looks stupid beside iPads and Android tablets. By the time Windows 8 is out, apps like Splashtop is going to work even better (with better infrastructure in place) so if they can’t make Windows a good tablet experience then more and more people will simply “outsource” their Windows experience.
