Microsoft has posted a first look at Windows 8, which will be the first Windows OS that actually works well on tablets. The big difference is that Windows 8 is basically a new OS that runs on top of a Windows 7-like OS. WIndows 8 apps look more like Android/iOS/etc apps that run in fullscreen and make away with toolbars and all that. Underneath all that, you have the legacy Windows experience. It all looks good, but the main question is going to be performance requirements. If you cannot run Windows 8 on a tablet that weighs 6-700 gramsm is fan-less and runs for 8-10 hours on a 25Wh battery, then it’s still going to result in bulky tablets that looks stupid beside iPads and Android tablets. By the time Windows 8 is out, apps like Splashtop is going to work even better (with better infrastructure in place) so if they can’t make Windows a good tablet experience then more and more people will simply “outsource” their Windows experience.
