Skype 2.0 working on HTC EVO 4G with latest 2.3 build
Thanks to a tip from G&E reader Davies, we're happy to announce that the Skype 2.0 (the one with video calling) .apk pulled from the HTC Thunderbolt is fully working on the HTC EVO 4G running the latest 2.3 build. The Thunderbolt isn't actually on the list of supported devices, but we're not questioning anything since the EVO isn't on the list either.
You'll have to download and install the .apk yourself, as the Market will only serve you the non-video HTC EVO 4G release, but that's not hard to do since you can grab the file right here.
Although this new version of Skype has been confirmed to work on the EVO 4G, it won't necessarily work on all ROMs. I know this because sadly, it's not working on my wife's 2.2 stock EVO or the 2.3.3 Gingerbread AOSP ROM I'm running. I've gotten little further than a few odd errors and brief glimpses of one-sided video before the final force close.
However, for those who have upgraded to the official Gingerbread OTA, it looks like there's a present for you today. To everyone else, keep your expectations in check and good luck.
Happy Skyping!
