Itty-bitty NanoSIM cards coming in 2012

Sim-580x408

SIM cards are basically the coolest things in smartphones today. They come in two different sizes, and you can pop them in and out of multiple devices while keeping your contacts and phone number. I frequently switch mine in and out of my iPhone 4 and 4S since they both utilize the MicroSIM card, but once I buy a new phone, that activity will probably be done with.

Giesecke & Devrient, a SIM card manufacturer, today revealed its plans to create the next generation of SIM cards, named NanoSIMs. Each one is about 60% smaller than their older MicroSIM siblings, creating extra space for manufacturers to add even more goodies into their devices.

You can expect to see these NanoSIMs make their way into devices early next year, at the earliest; however, if the release of MicroSIMs is to be followed, we might not see these adapted very rapidly. My guess is that Apple will be the first manufacturer to utilize NanoSIMs.
