iDashboard brings widgets to iOS…sort of

idashboard - for some reason we don't have an alt tag here

I just love when someone actually makes an app I’ve been wondering why doesn’t already exist. iDashboard is exactly such an app, bringing widgets to the iPad in form of a customizable app. Basically you just launch the app to get into your own private “home screen” with music controls, weather, clock, calendar shortcuts, RSS reader, Facebook, Twitter and photo album widgets to play with. Right now the app is pretty much what you see above, with a few more RSS windows hidden on a second page, but hopefully this will grow into a wide range of additional widgets in the future.

There’s quite a bit of potential here, but obviously you’re still very far from the widget system on Android. Just the fact that you have to launch an app might put some off, though on Android you basically have to launch the app list for access to those (unless you stuff all your icons on the home screens), so in that regard it’s just a bit..reversed. The bigger difference is that you’re depending on a single developer to provide widgets, and you’re limited to what the app can pull. Still, this is a nice start.
