The times they are a-changin'. Bob Dylan seems to have guessed right in his song on numerous occasions, with the newest one being about Windows 8 and Microsoft's direction for it.
We've heard about a ton of additions, subtractions, and overall changes for Microsoft next desktop operating system, but this is one that we neither heard nor expected: Microsoft has axed the Start button that's been included in every Windows iteration since '95, albeit with numerous changes.
The Start menu isn't completely gone, however. Previous updates to Windows 8 had a Metro-esque menu, and it looks like that isn't gone. To get to the menu, users will either have to press the Windows key on their keyboards or swing their mice to where the Start button would normally be: this will activate a hot corner, and the result is the menu.
I understand that you can type the filename or program you need while you're in the Start menu and get to where you need to go, but I also like to use a mouse to click things. Typing is a lot less comfortable than placing your hand on an ergonomic mouse. And while hot corners are great for some things, I often find myself accidentally activating them when I mouse over to get to something else.
I really hope Microsoft changes its mind, or at least offers an option to disable/enable it. What are your thoughts on the removal?
