Just because Samsung has given up on updating their Galaxy S line to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich doesn't mean that open source developers have. Coming just days after Samsung's non-ICS value pack landed on Korean Galaxy S devices, the first alpha of Cyanogenmod 9 for the Galaxy S has been uploaded to the project's servers.
While Cyanogenmod is by no means official, it is the most widely used and carefully developed Android ROM. It is also built directly from Google's source, with various performance and stability improvements over the stock version.
As the release is still in alpha, there will be many bugs and quriks that make this particular release impractical for daily use, but daring users can still download the build if they are so inclined.
However, the release is still important because it shows that the Cyanogenmod team does plan to support the Galaxy S in Cyanogenmod 9. So, even though the alpha may have bugs, once the final version is released it will likely be as stable as an official update.
The alpha build for the international Galaxy S i9000 only can be download through the source link, and carrier specific ROMS should be coming soon.
