Huawei is another China-based manufacturer of telecom products. It hasn't made much of a dent in the US market, but worldwide, it's currently the second largest provider of mobile telecommunications equipment. And now, the company wants to become a leader in innovative technology, too.
Today, John Roese, Huawei's general manager for North American research and development center, told Computerworld that the company is wanting to get into producing "disruptive" technologies that will alter the market.
Specifically, Huawei is planning on introducing touchless smartphones that the company believes will allow users to perform more tasks.
"What if you use the camera of a tablet or a smartphone and use it to capture the visualization of your hands. So imagine instead of touching a smartphone, you can actually have a three-dimensional interaction with it."
Sony is currently offering a touchless interface in its Xperia sola phone with its Floating Touch technology, but that doesn't actually allow you to complete any tasks. It's simply a way to see which link you're hovering over so you can accurately click the one you want.
I hope Huawei can make a splash Stateside because it seems that its employees are cooking up some really cool technology. I'd certainly consider a Huawei phone if I didn't even have to touch it to send a text.
