Nokia’s ClearBlack display is best in class outdoors

It seems that almost every smartphone manufacturer has its own screen technology that promises to make the time you spend looking at the display more enjoyable. Apple has its Retina display; Samsung, its AMOLED technology; and Nokia, its ClearBlack display. There’s no doubt that they all look incredible, but which looks the best outdoors?

That’s the question DisplayMate asked, and it compared five different displays from manufacturers in various forms of lighting. The picture to the right shows, in order from top to bottom, the top three displays. The leftmost column shows moderate outdoor daylight, while the middle shows full daylight (not direct sunlight), and the right shows indirect outdoor sunlight.

As you can see, the Lumia 900 won in all of the contests. DisplayMate says this is due to the screen’s brightness and low level of reflectance – both of which are technologies that make ClearBlack, ClearBlack. Meanwhile, the iPhone 4 and Galaxy S tied for second.

Before my friend returned his Lumia 900 for an HTC One X, I got the chance to look at the display. I didn’t take it outside, but it’s certainly brighter than my iPhone 4S’, and it seems to show less reflections, too. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily good outdoors; it’s just better than the rest.
