How to mod the HTC EVO 3D Seidio car mount for use with the HTC EVO 4G LTE

This guest post was written by Rob Fortner.

With a desire to save some money, and to not have to pay another $50 for a new car mount for my HTC EVO 4G LTE when I already had a perfectly good Seidio EVO 3D car mount, I had an epiphany: Would the EVO 4G LTE fit in the same car mount?

At first glance, no: the EVO 4G LTE is too long.

But then I noticed that the EVO 4G LTE and the EVO 3D USB ports are both very close to the same place on each phone. So I asked myself, what if I made room using a Dremel? Well, after about 15 minutes, it worked. Here is what I did.

Step 1: I gathered the tools: Dremel, 952 aluminum oxide grinding stone (for smoothing), and 1a 15 high-speed cutter (for rough grinding).

Step 2: I removed the insert and set it aside for later.

Step 3: I gradually contoured the inside of both ends of the holder, test-fitting the EVO 4G LTE as I removed plastic from each end until the phone fit snugly.

Step 4: I turned my attention to the insert, carefully removing plastic from the ends to allow the phone to stick out of both ends.

Step 5: After smoothing out the plastic, I now have a new EVO 4G LTE car mount! The final results look like this:

While you’re doing this mod, just keep in mind to make sure to remove the plastic a little at a time, and to make sure to remove the same amount from both ends.
