HTC One X vs Samsung Galaxy SIII: Talking points for salespeople
OK, this is actually pretty funny. HTC has created a sales training document that pits the Samsung Galaxy SIII against the HTC One X, with different talking points that salespeople should communicate to customers who are trying to decide between the two devices. Some of the comparisons are obvious: the international One X has a quad-core 1.5GHz processor compared to the GS3’s 1.4GHz. HTC also pumps up Beats Audio, the higher density screen on the One X, and the One X camera, which HTC claims is 70% better in low light conditions. The One X’s polycarbonate body is also supposedly more durable than the GS3’s plastic.
But here’s where things start to get funny: in the design category, HTC says the One X is “world acclaimed,” while the GS3 is “disappointing.” If a customer objects that the GS3 is slimmer, the salesperson is supposed to respond that there’s only a 0.3mm difference, that the One X still “feels” slimmer, and that it “looks way better.” HTC also somehow claims that the non-removable battery of the One X makes it more dust and water resistant. And finally, even though the GS3 has a micro-SD slot and the One X doesn’t, the One X really has 57GB of storage – if you’re counting 25GB of storage from Dropbox.
It kind of seems like HTC is grasping at straws here.
Now, don’t get me wrong: I obviously have quite a bit of brand loyalty for HTC. From the T-Mobile myTouch 3G through the HTC EVO 4G LTE, HTC has manufactured every single Android smartphone I’ve ever owned. But come on, you’d either have to be very gullible or downright technologically illiterate to fall for all the tricks HTC is pulling here.
Why not talk about all the awesome things Sense 4.0 brings to the table? Why not focus on all the other cool features of the camera, like burst mode, Video Pic, and Smart Flash? Granted, some of these talking points are very valid, but you can’t really claim that 0.1GHz is a big difference in processing speed, but 0.3mm thickness is negligible: honestly, they both won’t make a lick of difference to most people.
HTC, you’ve got a fantastic product on your hands: focus on where it really shines, and please try not to stoop to this level anymore. Yes, this is kind of funny – but I know you didn’t intend for it to be.
