Why I decided to get rid of my magazine subscriptions
I love Pocketables. It’s my favorite online magazine for a number of reasons, but I do use a few devices that would never fit in any of my pockets, and I also love comic books – two things that we don’t focus on.
So to read up on the latest gaming rigs, Mac desktops, and comic book heroes, I turn my attention toward other publications. For the longest time, I’ve been a subscriber of Mac|Life, MacWorld, Maximum PC and a few comic books that I just couldn’t find for this picture.
That last sentence is really a testament to why I’ve decided to cancel my magazine subscriptions: I just don’t want to carry around four or five books when I go somewhere, nor do I want to have to find them when I’m rushing out the door. Something I do find and take with me every time I leave the house is my iPad, and luckily, most of the magazines that I still read offer subscriptions through Apple’s Newsstand app.
Plus, paper magazines are starting to feel rather old. I can’t search for text; likewise, I can’t search for specific articles. Those might be problems that stem from my laziness, but I find myself going to the websites of my favorite magazines to read articles so I can search for what I want.
There are plenty of options for me to get my fix of magazines. Zinio has a great magazine app, and there are even more magazines that I could be exposed to because of the iPad. So, in one month, I will write another article to report how I have adjusted to reading all of my magazines on the new iPad’s Retina display. I don’t know if I’ll like it or hate it, but I’ve got one month to make the move from paper to LCD.
