MokeeOS port for rooted HTC EVO 4G brings something neat to the table

2012 06 08 10.14.32 - for some reason we don't have an alt tag hereMokeeOS is a port of a Chinese-based ROM for the HTC EVO 4G. The EVO version is based off of CyanogenMod 7.2RC2 and in its initial development offering, it’s wickedly responsive, highly themed, fairly stable, and just plain pretty.

MokeeOS on the EVO is probably not quite ready for prime time, but it’s almost there. It also includes some neat features I have not seen (or at least noticed) in ROMs for the 4G. Among them are that the camera application includes a barcode/QR reader built in, landscape mode looks really good with the persisting applications hanging on the right side, the app drawer is invisible, and the whole thing has just a really neat look.

The ROM claims to have everything working, but unfortunately that’s not the case. If you want 4G, for example, you’re out of luck. Then again, if you’re on Sprint and want 4G you’re already quite possibly out of luck anyway, so this may not be a deciding factor for you. But since it’s based off of CM7x, we can expect that 4G is an option that can be added in later.

The occasional menu option in settings can crash the app, and every now and then another language can be seen in one of the screens.

There’s nothing that makes it a deal breaker in terms of stability or speed, and if you’re willing to put a little effort into the ROM I cannot stress how nice the thing performs and looks. It will pay off: get a new kernel, replace the keyboard, and do little bit of housekeeping. This, however, is after you’ve already wiped, installed the ROM, installed GAPPS, installed Superuser, etc.

The ROM is not perfect yet, but considering it only hit the EVO 4G world yesterday, it’s a really good start. Working 4G, a different kernel, a better install script, and some minor cosmetic changes, and this ROM is a serious challenger for the EVO 4G ROM throne. Having to do nine additional steps to make it perfect does tend to limit the contention possibilities for the fresh-out-of-the-box install. Bear in mind, though: new ROM, day one.

If you’re up for a little work tweaking on this ROM, check it out. If you’re not up for changing a lot of the parts out, give it a few days and check back in. The potential for this is pretty amazing; as it stands now, in my opinion it’s “ooh, neat!” and not quite “awwww yeah!” yet.
