Apple announces two million first day iPhone 5 preorders

On Friday – at 12:01 a.m. PST – Apple started letting its customers preorder the recently-announced iPhone 5. Opening day shipments sold out in a matter of hours, and now, iPhone 5 preorderers will have to wait an extra two to three weeks after September 21.

Today, Apple announced that its first day preorders topped a whopping two million orders. For reference, iPhone 4S preorders (in the same time period) only hit one million.

Here is part of the press release from Apple, wherein Phil Schiller talks about the successful preorders:

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal,” said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

Preorderers who were able to get an opening day shipment will get their new 4-inch handsets this Friday, September 21. That’s also the date when Apple Stores and other authorized resellers will begin selling phones to customers, too – so if you want one on opening day and didn’t get a preorder in to fulfill that desire, you can still head to your local Apple/electronics store and pick one up then.

Who was able to get their preorders in this weekend?
