When I reviewed the Motorola Droid RAZR MAXX HD, it was running a customized version of Android 4.0 that was fairly decent, but really nothing special. The software worked quite well, but I did miss some Jelly Bean features, such as Google Now. Fortunately for owners of the RAZR HD and RAZR MAXX HD, Verizon is now pushing out Android 4.1.1 builds to the devices, bringing along many of Jelly Bean’s most popular features.
Primarily, the update adds Google Now to the RAZR MAXX HD, but the updated OS also includes expandable notifications, an enhanced keyboard, better widget management, and other small tweaks. Verizon and Motorola have also added proprietary changes to the calendar and Verizon’s Back Up Assistant, as well as enhancements to voice and data connectivity. The update also removes two bloatware apps, but adds in other Amazon applications to offset the loss.
The software that originally shipped on the RAZR MAXX HD was perfectly decent, but the fact that Verizon seems to actually be updating the smartphone in a somewhat timely manner will make a difference to many buyers. Sure, it won’t reinvent the phone in the slightest, but an update to a newer version of Android is almost always welcome.
