Tip: Contact picture sync works properly on HTC EVO 4G LTE, no hacking required

Facebook contact sync - for some reason we don't have an alt tag here

Lately, I’ve been complaining a lot about all the bugs and broken things I’ve seen on the recent Jelly Bean update on the HTC EVO 4G LTE – but let’s face it; probably everyone who took the update has at least one gripe about it, even if it’s minor. However, it’s not all bad: one thing that’s working quite nicely is contact picture sync, with no hacking required.

On previous software versions of the EVO 4G LTE, Facebook contact pictures didn’t show up properly when using other apps that had access to your contacts – this included Google Voice and other third-party SMS replacements, like Handcent or GO SMS. To get this functioning properly, you had to root your phone and use an app like Photo Unlocker, which would work some magic in the contacts database and recover those missing pictures.

I’m extremely happy to see that this workaround isn’t required in Jelly Bean, and I am now able to see my contacts’ Facebook pictures in Google Voice, which is great for me since that’s all I use to text. And as an added bonus, Facebook statuses seem to be syncing more reliably, too, and I’ve had absolutely zero contact lag.

HTC still has a lot of work to do before all the bugs on this device are squashed, but I’m glad to see that this one is gone.
