Tip: Roam Control no longer works on updated HTC EVO 4G LTE

Roam Control logo - for some reason we don't have an alt tag here

There are lots of reasons to update to Jelly Bean on the HTC EVO 4G LTE, but also lots of reasons to hold off, as well. And if you’re someone who is frequently is fringe areas between Sprint service and roaming service, you may want to wait a little while before updating to Android 4.1 on your EVO.

That’s because Roam Control doesn’t work yet on the EVO running Jelly Bean. Although the app has long been pulled from the Google Play Store, it’s still available for sideloading, and as far as I know, it’s the only way to easily switch back and forth between roaming and Sprint service on the stock EVO 4G LTE. (I’m aware that some custom ROMs have this feature built in, and that some people choose to load roam-only PRLS; however, Roam Control was an app that worked wonderfully for those who wanted to stay stock and not risk getting their service cut off due to obscene amounts of roaming on Verizon.)

The developer of Roam Control has released several updates in the recent past, so it appears that the app is still actively supported. But at the same time, given the developer’s track record, it can also take months before the app is updated to be compatible with specific software. In any case, I’ll definitely keep my eye open for updates, and report back to you as soon as it’s working once more.
