Over the weekend, reports began to surface that a new Android update had been discovered running on certain Nexus 4 units. While most devices other than the Nexus series have yet to reach 4.2, some units were apparently shipped with the version from a Brazilian factory, and have now been caught in images and on video.
In addition to the Brazilian reports, some Malaysian Nexus devices have also been found running Android 4.2.2. While Google has yet to announce anything, it is possible that these could be actual test builds of a new version of Android, as it does appear that the version lists “dev-keys” at the end of the build number. Interestingly, Android 4.2.2 doesn’t appear to change very much, at least according to the video and images, as the UI and most features remain the same as Android 4.2.1. It is possible that the new features simply haven’t been discovered yet, but I think it more likely that Android 4.2.2 is more of a bug fix version than even Android 4.1.2, which still included a couple of small fixes for the Nexus 7.
More likely than not, Android 4.2.2 will just be a small bug fix update that Google pushes out to Nexus devices in the following weeks, and which doesn’t have any very significant changes. The optimistic can hope that it will bring along fixes for the notorious Nexus 7 lag, but I think it more likely that general bug fixes are the purpose of the update. Either way, we should find out soon enough once the update begins to land on Nexus devices, which we will be ready to cover.
