CES 2013 in Las Vegas has hit the ground running, as we’re already getting incredibly exciting announcements regarding NVIDIA’s upcoming Tegra 4 processor – and it’s only lunchtime on Monday.
The processor
The Tegra 4 processor will feature 72 GPU cores (yes, 72), 4 A15 CPU cores, and a 4G LTE processor. In practical terms, this means it will take 27 seconds to load 25 unique web pages, beating out Apple’s iPad 4, the HTC Droid DNA, and the Amazon Kindle Fire HD – in fact, it was almost twice as fast as the Samsung Nexus 10. This blazing fast processor will also help your portable device take better photos – it has a “one-shot HDR” that speeds up the process over ten times what consumers currently experience on the iPhone 5. Additionally, the Tegra 4 will be able to play and output 4K video, which will make gamers everywhere extremely gleeful.
Tegra 4 portable game console (“Project Shield”)
In fact, NVIDIA surprised almost everyone when it announced its own portable game console: Project Shield. The 5-inch, “retinal” HD mulit-touch display sits on top of a game controller that resembles a cross between a PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 controller. It will run Android games, but it’s also got a built-in streaming application, making it capable of running complete PC games. Early impressions of this portable game console are positive – some are even saying that games look even better on the Project Shield game console than on the PC running them, due to the higher pixel density. This is expected to ship in the second half of 2013.
World’s first Tegra 4 tablet
Vizio is also making headlines by producing the world’s first Tegra 4 tablet. Similar to the Nexus 10, it will have a 10-inch display with 2560×1600 resolution and run stock Android 4.2 with no manufacturer customizations. It will also have 32GB of internal storage, front and rear cameras, a mini (not micro) USB port, and a micro HDMI port. Vizio also announced a less-exciting Nexus 7 competitor, with almost identical specs to the ASUS Nexus 7, including a Tegra 3 processor. Both tablets are expected to ship sometime in the first half of this year.
