As if the ASUS Nexus 7 wasn’t already awesome enough, rumors are now circulating about a revised version of my favorite 7-inch tablet that will bring a 1080p full HD display to the table. Google is rumored to unveil the new Nexus 7 at Google I/O in May, with combined sales of the first- and second-generation Nexus 7 tablets expected to reach 10 million units by the end of 2013.
Specs of the new Nexus 7 are expected to be bumped slightly, and the tablet will be slightly thinner with less bezel, but it will sell for the same price as the first generation Nexus 7; namely, between $199-$249, depending on the model. According to this rumor, the new Nexus 7 will also run a newer version of Jelly Bean, in spite of previous speculation that Google might unveil Key Lime Pie at Google I/O.
All-in-all, this seems like a very believable rumor to me, despite the source. Google gave Samsung two runs with the Nexus S and Galaxy Nexus smartphones, so it seems logical that Google would give ASUS at least two runs with the Nexus 7 tablet, as well. Additionally, it seems that Google has definitely found the sweet spot in regards to tablet pricing, so I doubt it would want to raise the price at all. Personally, I’d also like to see a decent back camera, but I have a feeling this might be a hardware feature reserved for Google’s larger, more premium Nexus 10 line.
