The ASUS Nexus 7 has just been re-certified by the Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group), with a new build number of JWR11. Interestingly enough, the model number is exactly the same as the current version of the Nexus 7, which means this isn’t that revised Nexus 7 we’ve all been hoping for. Instead, it’s the same old Nexus 7 we’ve come to know and love – although it’s running a software build that no one outside of Google and ASUS has touched.
So what does this mean?
The only possible explanation that I’ve been able to find is that Android 4.3 might require re-certification with the Bluetooth SIG. That’s because Android 4.3 is said to bring support for low-energy Bluetooth 4.0, which very possibly triggered the re-certification we’re seeing here.
While it might have been easy earlier today to lose hope that a new version of Android was on the way, this seems to indicate that Android will be updated very soon. The only question that remains is how fast it will take HTC, Samsung, and the like to update their flagship devices.
