Deal alert: Best Buy offers students Chromecasts for $29.99 (14% off)

It’s not often you’ll find official Google devices like the Chrome or Nexus lineups discounted. So when a national retailer does throw us a bone, however small, we take note. And that’s exactly what Best Buy is doing with the Chromecast right now.

If you’re in college and have a valid .edu email address, simply head over to Best Buy’s student deals page, in the source links below. Enter your school email, and the electronics retailer will send you a handy coupon for $5 off the $34.99 asking price.

Yes, it’s only $5. And yes, the Chromecast only costs $35 full retail. Students, however, are notorious cheapskates, and it’s nice to see a new Chromecast deal since the original Netflix freebie is now gone forever. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can also attempt to root your Chromecast as soon as you get it, but don’t wait too long – if you let your Chromecast connect to the internet long enough to download an update, you may have lost all ability to root it.
