T-Mobile users can now send MMS to Google Voice users

MMS-support: It’s the bane of Google Voice’s existence, because it’s largely unsupported for most users. This has long been a major annoyance for hundreds – maybe thousands – of people who have transitioned into using their Google Voice number full time. To make matters worse, for the past two years, only Sprint customers have been able to send Google Voice users MMS, although Google Voice users can still only send SMS.

Google has promised that Hangouts is the future of Google Voice, and that MMS support would subsequently be coming to Hangouts, and it looks like Google is one step further in its goal. Taking to Google+, Googler Alex Wiesen announced that T-Mobile now allows its users to send MMS to Google Voice numbers. Similar to Sprint, these messages will appear in Gmail, and users will then be notified by SMS that a message is waiting.

Additionally, Wiesen promises that “[w]e continue to work with other carriers to broaden support for messaging and bring MMS to Hangouts. More good things are coming!”

I’d still like to see the ability for Google Voice users to send MMS, as well, and it would be much nicer if MMS could appear in the Hangouts app. I have confidence, though, that Google is working on this and will soon have even more good news for us.
